The celebration started long before the final out.
As junior ace Claire Achilles fired a strike across the plate Monday night at Grand Canyon University, the Tanque Verde Hawks erupted from the dugout, sprinting toward the pitching circle in a moment years in the making. For the first time in school history, Tanque Verde High School is a state softball champion.
The seventh-seeded Hawks dominated fifth-seeded Yuma Catholic 10-0 in six innings to capture the Arizona 3A state championship, capping a remarkable postseason run that transformed Tanque Verde from underdog to title holder.
Achilles, a University of Connecticut commit and one of Southern Arizona’s most dominant pitchers, delivered a championship performance worthy of the spotlight. The junior allowed just one hit, walked one batter and struck out 13 in a complete-game shutout. Her overpowering effort earned her the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s 3A Tournament MVP honors.
The Hawks entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed but looked every bit like a championship favorite throughout the postseason. Tanque Verde opened with a 16-0 rout of Bourgade Catholic, then stunned second-seeded Show Low in the quarterfinals before defeating Southern Arizona rival Empire 9-2 in the semifinals.
The semifinal victory over Empire carried extra meaning for the Hawks program. Empire had ended Tanque Verde’s playoff hopes in both 2024 and 2025, making Friday’s breakthrough feel like unfinished business finally settled.
Offensively, the Hawks delivered throughout the tournament, led by sophomore slugger Mikaela Jackson. Jackson entered the semifinal round with 22 home runs and 71 RBIs on the season and continued her torrid pace in the championship game, where she and sophomore Ella Haggard each collected three hits.
Tanque Verde finished the season 22-3 and completed one of the most impressive playoff runs in Arizona high school softball this year.
For a program that had never previously reached the championship game, Monday night represented more than a trophy. It marked a defining moment for a rapidly growing softball tradition in Tucson’s northeast side.
And as the Hawks gathered for photos beneath the championship banner, one thing was clear: Tanque Verde softball has officially arrived.
