Tanque Verde, Ariz. — July 9, 2026 — Tanque Verde High School is proud to announce the appointment of former professional baseball pitcher and Southern Arizona baseball standout John Bannister as its new Head Baseball Coach, beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. Bannister’s hiring brings one of Tucson’s most accomplished baseball figures back to the local high school ranks and signals an exciting new era for Hawks Baseball.
A Tucson native and Sabino High School graduate, Bannister established himself as one of Southern Arizona’s premier prep baseball players before embarking on a professional baseball career. Following his standout high school career, he was drafted by the Texas Rangers organization and went on to play professional baseball from 2003 to 2010 within the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals organizations. During his seven-year professional career, he gained firsthand experience in player development, teamwork, and the dedication required to succeed in professional baseball. Those experiences continue to shape his leadership philosophy and commitment to helping student-athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field.

Our baseball program has established tremendous momentum, and I am excited to see John build upon that foundation and help elevate Hawks Baseball to even greater heights.”
As Head Baseball Coach, Bannister will focus on developing a competitive program built on hard work, discipline, teamwork, and personal growth. Drawing upon his professional playing experience and leadership background, he is committed to helping student-athletes strengthen their skills, build confidence, and pursue excellence in athletics, academics, and life.
Bannister joins a program that has demonstrated consistent growth and competitiveness in recent years. With consecutive playoff appearances and a ranking as high as No. 1 in Arizona’s 3A Conference, Tanque Verde Baseball has established itself as one of Southern Arizona’s emerging programs. Tanque Verde believes Bannister’s experience, leadership, and commitment to player development will help elevate the program to even greater heights.
